What Size Hand Control Bow Mount Trolling Motor Do I Need?

If you are asking, what size hand control bow mount trolling motor do I need for my boat, this article is for you! When buying an electric trolling motor, it’s essential to get the right size for your boat. A hand control bow mount trolling motor size has two main factors: thrust (or motor power), and shaft length. Keep reading to find out how to find the size from Pro Controll that will work for you!

At Pro Controll, we offer two types of a hand control bow mount trolling motor. Both of these hand-controlled bow mount trolling motor options are great for any angler that is serious about their fishing. When choosing a motor size, it’s important to look at thrust and shaft length together. Jointly these need to be correctly matched with your boat and getting it wrong can result in major headaches while on the water.  Let’s take a closer look into these two motor types:

  • The S-Type: The Revolution S-Type Trolling Motors by Pro Controll are for Freshwater Fishing – with an Adjustable Bracket that mounts to either the Transom or Bow of any Jon or Utility boat with Gunnels Less Than Three Inches Wide and One Inch Deep, –they come with a 12-inch Extendable Tiller Handle and the head “Tilts Up and Down” to make Steering easier, whether standing or sitting.
  • The L-Type: The Revolution L-Type Trolling Motors by Pro Controll are for Freshwater Fishing – with an Adjustable Bracket that mounts to either the Transom or Bow of any Jon or Utility boat with Gunnels Less Than Three Inches Wide and One Inch Deep, –they come with a 12-inch Extendable Tiller Handle and a fixed head.

Now let’s talk about how to choose the correct size! As a rule of thumb, a trolling motor should provide about 2 pounds thrust for every 100 pounds of fully loaded boat weight, however, if you expect to encounter strong winds or currents, you’ll need more power so you have to factor that in.

With a situation like that, it’s necessary to add about 10 to 20% additional thrust in order for the motor to perform adequately. Also keep in mind, boats with a deep draught provide more resistance to a water current than boats with a shallow draught and will require a larger trolling motor. When in doubt, it’s typically best to get an overpowered trolling motor, since that’s easier to compensate for, than an underpowered one. Here is a table for reference:
